Right, so we have some rather interesting developments here in the story.This book covers episode 5 to 6 of the anime and also the beginning of Episode 7 as the cliffhanger to end volume 3.After Kazuya and Chizuru rescue each other from almost drowning, they return home. He starts finding real non-refundable feelings for Chizuru in a surprise... or not-so-surprise twist. Both of their grandmas trick them into taking a trip to the hot springs. Whatever will they do? Reveal the truth or continue to awkwardly put on an act?Due to circumstances, what will they do now?Even more surprising is the idea of a double date. Kazuya's friend has also acquired a girlfriend and they all go rock-climbing. Here we have the introduction of one of the next female main characters, Ruka Sarashina... and she is aware of Chizuru being a rental-GF. RED ALERT moment. Kazuya and Chizuru manage to hide it... but can they risk Ruka telling her boyfriend; Kazuya's friend the truth?But... interestingly enough, Ruka is also revealed to be a Rental-GF as well. Interesting cliffhanger right there.As I got into reading the series and watching the anime alongside, I actually had heard of Ruka being a character in the series. However, I was genuinely not expecting her reveal as a rental-GF at all.I think the development of Chizuru and Kazuya's friendship is apparent. It's good but it also has to remain professional because she is a "girlfriend" to plenty of clients that want her services. It's her job. She has to maintain her work ethic under the rules of the company that she works for. Kazuya goes through... not a big character development here but he wants to try. I like him better in this volume than the last one because his behavior really annoyed me a little. Seeing him trying to do better and getting his act together is like the moments that make me cheer for him. But when he fantasizes about Mami, whom I dislike with a passion even though we have yet to understand her backstory/story arc, it really reminds me of friends who pine for their exs in a really unhealthy way.Anyway, an introduction to the next main female lead, a twisty comedic double-date, and a typical hot springs vacation arc in this series occurs in this volume. Want to know more? Definitely give this volume a read.
